The Perry School has a developmentally child-centered curriculum that is designed to nurture the unique potential of each child. The responsibility of educating the young children of Perry School is a challenging task that is met with seriousness and enthusiasm.
Embracing an interdisciplinary approach, a balance between child-selected and child-designed activities, and teacher-developed and teacher-guided activities are included throughout the day. This combination affords each child the opportunity to explore individual interests while gaining exposure to a wider variety of ideas. The link between these two elements is evident as the children incorporate new knowledge and skills throughout their play activities and the teachers integrate the children’s interests into the units of study.
All curricular decisions are guided by the data collected during careful observations of the children. The data include the children’s interests, talents, and levels of development in each domain. These observations help the teachers in developing meaningful responses to the children’s play, selecting appropriate interdisciplinary themes, and facilitating problem solving activities.
Perry School was founded by Director, Dawn Lesley Stewart in 2001 for an ever blossoming family community in the West Village. She received a Masters Degree in Education at the University of Toronto before moving to New York City! Originally located on Perry Street, word about Perry School spread quickly throughout the neighborhood and Dawn realized her need for a larger space. For 10 years, Perry School, found its niche and home in an airy open garage space on Perry Street. In 2010, Perry School moved its entities which includes Baby Moves and Go Pop Kids to a larger space in the historic Westbeth Center for the Arts at 155 Bank Street between Washington and West Street.
Many families had grown up with our Mommy & Me classes and quickly graduated into our toddler classes. Dawn found a need for a nurturing, loving school. With her vision, the school has progressed into what it is today with Perry School – our alternative preschool, Baby Moves classes and our after school program, Go Pop Kids.
We look forward to seeing you!
